Sanctions: European Union (April 12, 2011)

In April 2011, the European Union named Abbas Pir-Abbasi as an individual subject to sanctions for human rights violations. According to the Official Journal of the European Union, Pir-Abassi presided over numerous unfair trials of human rights activists following the 2009 election, doling out long prison sentences and several death sentences to those convicted. [1]

In May 2010, Pir-Abassi banned journalist and women’s rights activist Jila Baniyaghoob from writing for 30 years, according to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.[2]
