Abdolghassem Salavati

Title: Head Judge of Tehran Revolutionary Court, Branch 15

Sanctions: European Union (April 12, 2011)

In April 2011, the European Union named Salavati as an individual subject to sanctions for human rights violations. Salavati presided over Iran’s so-called “show trials” in summer 2009.[1]

According to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI), Salavati has played a critical role in sentencing political prisoners, human rights activists and protesters to long sentences in unfair trials. [2] Iran’s Revolutionary Court runs separately from the country’s civil judiciary, and is intended to protect the regime against threats to its security.

According to ICHRI, Salavati presided over a number of trials of individuals arrested in the aftermath of the June 2009 election. Through these cases, he earned a reputation as the “Number One Man” for doling out death sentences against those arrested since the June 2009 elections.[3]
