Hassan Akharian

Title: Keeper Ward 1 of Radjaishahr Prison

Sanctions: European Union (October 10, 2011)

The European Union sanctioned Hassan Akharian in October 2011for his involvement in prisoner abuse in Iran’s Radjaishahr prison which includes beatings and withholding medical attention.[1] According to Iran Focus, the prison’s Ward 1 is infamously known as “the doghouse,” by for its harsh conciliations and reputation for a place where prisoners are sent to be quieted.[2]

According to the human rights publication Persian 2 English, Behrouz Javid Tehrani, a political prisoner held in the ward, described the conditions in a April 2010 letter to Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon as full of “crime, torture, injustice, death, corruption, death due to lack of treatment, [and] prisoner suicides.”[3] The Official Journal of the European Union cited one instance of a prisoner’s death under Akharian’s watch.[4]
