Tony Badran
Tony Badran is a Research Fellow with the Center for Terrorism Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) in Washington, DC. He focuses on Lebanon, Syria and Hezbollah.

His research includes US policy towards Lebanon and Syria; Syrian foreign policy, with a focus on its regional relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Israel and Lebanon; Syria’s ties to militant non-state actors and terrorist groups; and Syria’s international relations, especially with Russia and the EU. Mr. Badran’s other research has dealt with Syria’s use of information warfare, as well as with the Syrian opposition movement.

Mr. Badran also specializes in Lebanese affairs and has authored original work on the military history of the Lebanese civil war and on Hezbollah. Mr. Badran also works on Islamist groups in the Levant.

Mr. Badran’s writings have appeared in a number of mainstream publications, including the Los Angeles Times, Forbes.com, National Review Online, ForeignPolicy.com, the Jerusalem Post, the Daily Star, NOW Lebanon, and the Mideast Monitor, among others, as well as in academic and policy journals and publications, including the Middle East Review for International Affairs, the Middle East Quarterly, Current Trends in Islamist Ideology, Transatlantic Issues, and In Focus Quarterly, as well as FDD’s Policy Studies and Policy Briefings.

Mr. Badran appears regularly in the media both in the US and abroad, and is frequently quoted in print including in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Sun, Slate, the Weekly Standard, Reason, Foreign Policy, City Journal, and NOW Lebanon, among others.

In addition, Mr. Badran speaks regularly at leading policy research institutes and schools. He has held regular briefings with US and EU government officials, and was invited to testify at a hearing on Syria in the European Parliament.

Mr. Badran is also the author of a well-respected blog, Across the Bay, where he reports and comments on developments impacting the Levant and US policy in the region.

Born and raised in Lebanon, Mr. Badran is currently completing his doctorate at New York University. He is fluent in English, French, Arabic and Greek and has a working knowledge of German and Hebrew.
