Iran Press Review: 12 Sept.

Politics

  • Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Alam al-Hoda, the current Friday prayer leader for the city of Mashhad exclaims that "the president must be the Commander of (Iran’s) cultural defense." He went on to link Rouhani’s service as (air) defense commander during the Iran-Iraq War era to the present cultural need.

Foreign Policy

  • In his remarks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, President Hassan Rouhani notes:
    • "Confronting sanctions should be the fundamentals of the Shanghai Organization."
    • "Today, many of the countries in the Shanghai Organization are more or less faced with the dangers of extremism and terrorism"
    • "Presently, we witness what war-mongering groups and extremists have wrought upon the nation of Iraq in addition to the savagery and killings in Syria."
  • Resalat-News quoting Fars News Agency reports that the Chairman of the Cultural Council for the Office of the President, Hojjat al-Eslam Seyyed Reza Akrami states: "America’s time as a super-power has come to an end."
  • Akrami went on to discuss regional issues, noting: "In Syria, Western governments came and established the Free Army and Jebhat al-Nusrah and presently they have been turned in Daesh (the Persian/Arabic acronym for the Isalmic State – IS)"
  • Fars News Agency reports that: "The Iranian foreign ministry summoned the Saudi charge d'affaires in Tehran over the beheading of an Iranian national on charges of drug trafficking."
  • Gulf News notes based off of reporting by AP and Reuters that: "France is prepared to invite Iran to an international conference on Monday aimed at coordinating actions to knock out the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) — even though that runs counter to the US refusal to deal with Tehran."

Military and Security

  • Commander Seyyed Masoud Jazayeri, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces for Basij, Cultural Affairs and Defense ridicules the notion of Iranian collaboration with the United States to combat the Islamic State (IS/Daesh):
    • "Such cooperation is not fathomable under any circumstances."
    • "The reason for this issue is that Iran stands against Daesh but America has created Daesh."
    • "Daesh under no circumstances can come close to Iran’s borders, because they will be confronted with the might of (Iran’s) armed forces."
  • A funeral service for Abolfazl Hosseini, the "defender of the shrine of Zeinab," in Syria, takes place in the city of Rey.
  • Reuters reports that: "Iran has called on the U.N. atomic agency to condemn an "act of aggression" by Israel for sending, Tehran says, a drone last month to spy on a site which is at the center of its decade-old nuclear dispute with the West."

Nuclear Issue

  • Ayatollah Movahedi Kermani, interim Friday prayer leader for Tehran states:
    • "To Iran's negotiation team I tell this: You know that the United States is the enemy. Believe me: One can't expect anything from the enemy but enmity. This is what the Quran says about Satan... Imam Ali says: 'Don't remain in your home until the enemy attacks. Don't give the enemy the chance.' Of course, the negotiation team must know that they are messengers of the Islamic revolution and you must show the beauties of the revolution in that atmosphere... Abide by the red lines, and you will certainly retain the approval of the Leader and the entire nation..."

Economy

  • According to Shahrvand, private households in Iran have 100 tonnes gold savings which allegedly exceeds the Central Bank of Iran's alleged 95 tonnes gold reserves. The latter number, announced by the Rouhani government officials, is a significant decrease from the 500 tonnes of gold which Ahmadinejad government officials claimed the Central Bank of Iran had in its reserves.
  • While members of both Iranian and Russian trade delegations dismiss rumors regarding a barter trade between the two countries, the Russian state trade agency reports that Russia is about to exchange wheat for $500 million oil imports from Iran.
  • Press TV reports on discussions between Iran and Turkey over an appropriate rate for Iranian Gas: "Tehran and Ankara will conclude an agreement on the price of natural gas exported from the Islamic Republic to Turkey by the end of the current year. "The parties have not come to a consensus about the gas prices up until now," Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said on Thursday, adding that Iran has tabled new proposals for reduction in gas prices."
