Iran Press Review: 21 August

Politics

  • Shargh releases a summary of speeches held while a parliamentary majority gave Reza Faraji-Dana, the now deposed Minister of Science, Research and Technology (higher education), a vote of no confidence:
    • Ali-Reza Zakani: “In the Intelligence Ministry's letter, 126 people were considered unqualified for university education. They were all unqualified hooligans whom you admitted to the university... Journals were allowed to be published at the universities which called for dismemberment of Iran... Professors with moral issues have returned to the universities. After our warning they were expelled, but are still receiving a salary...”
    • Mousa Ghazanfar-Abadi: “How come one of the leaders [Mohammad Khatami] of the sedition (fitneh – term used to describe the Green Movement) who is not supposed to be seen, went to a university...? How come an exiled minister [Ataollah Mohajerani], the BBC, and other snake poisons defend the minister...?! You did not understand the sedition. It is not good for interests in this life or the next to remain minister...”
    • Seyyed Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini: “400 emails against the Imam [Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini], the revolution, and the regime has been sent to members of the Academic Board from the university's email system...”
  • Commentary on the vote of no-confidence given to Faraji-Dana:
  • Kayhan: “The parliament has broken the horn of sedition!”
  • Jomhouri-ye Eslami accuses the parliamentary majority of “politicking.”
  • Etemad: “The impeachment had only one winner: Reza Faraji-Dana.”

Military and Security

  • The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNAreproduced part of a letter sent from Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi to Pope Francis:
  • “Western support has created Daesh (IS) and groups like it.”
  • “Takfiri groups are the biggest scourge of humanity, regardless of their type of religion or nationality. We have been yelling about this threat for years.”
  • “The response of Iran to [an] attack by the Zionist regime is deadly…The officials of the Zionist regime have again and again offered threats against Iran, but they know full-well that the price of any strike on Iran and our response will be so strong that even the thought of it is a deathly nightmare upon them because the Islamic Republic will respond to threats at the same level.”
  • Brigadier-General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Aerospace Forces proclaimed:

Economy

  • Resalat-News reported forecasts about Iran’s oil and gas prospects by Bahman Suleimani, a Deputy for Exploration in the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC):
    • “Iran has oil for up to 60 years and gas for up to another 200 years.”

Nuclear Issue

  • President Hassan Rouhani addresses the press corps during his visit to Ardebil province:
    • “On the nuclear issue, we must continue the negotiations most seriously... The negotiations are among issues which I personally, and systematically, follow and if necessary, I'll guide [the negotiations]... In this field, we are completely active and want the negotiations to reach the result. Of course, any country which is engaged in negotiations, must be vigilant of its own national interests and the rights of its people... As I promised in the election [campaign] our goal is that the centrifuges, as well as the people's life, spin. Meaning, our nuclear rights should be secured, and ectopic sanctions be removed... Today, in spite of still being under the sanctions regime ... the organization of illegal sanctions against the Iranian nation has been fractured... We have, and will release $7 billion of Iran's money sanctioned by great powers... When it comes to automobiles, auto sales, auto parts and in the petrochemical field we have removed the sanctions. In the field of exports and imports, the banking issues of sanctions are very different than last year, but we must nevertheless take more steps in order to remove sanctions.”
