Iran Press Review: 24 Sept.

Foreign Policy

  • Raja News ridicules Hamid Aboutalebi, the Head of President Hassan Rouhani's political office who was appointed the Islamic Republic's Ambassador to the United Nation, as "a symbol of failure of the eleventh cabinet's diplomacy." It continued:
    • "Mr. Aboutalebi, the United States calling you a terrorist was the result of the phone conversation [between Rouhani and President Barack Obama]. Do you think a meeting in person would reduce the problems?!" 
  • Mehrdad Bazrpash, parliamentarian exclaims: "The president [referring to Hassan Rouhani] is expected to talk about the injustice of the United States from the tribune of the United Nations." 
  • Esmail Kowsari, parliamentarian and a veteran of the Revolutionary Guards, warns against the threat of "espionage" if the United Kingdom reopens its embassy in Tehran. 
  • Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former president and current Chairman of the Expediency and Discernment Council proclaims that: "If we believe and have faith in logic and the reasoning language of the Revolution, why must we in advance fear negotiating with others."

Military and Security

  • Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addresses top military commanders, saying:
    • "The experience of the years of Holy Defense (the name given to the Iran-Iraq War) showed that amidst all bottlenecks, constraints, and lack of funding and plentiful problems, we can by conviction and trust in God, stand against forceful-ness and improper expectations of world powers."
    • "While the earthly and spiritual sacrifices of the imposed war were high, the achievements of the nation of Iran in the eight years of Holy Defense, when compared to its sacrifices, were great."
  • Artesh Ground Forces Commander Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan notes with respect to the Islamic State (IS/Daesh):
  • "This group, once it commenced its movement, captured 5 provinces of Iraq by surprise and surrounded them, and has continued forth on some areas, but the army of Iraq quickly regained its preparation and at present has a good state of readiness."
  • "We have training cooperation with Iraq and have placed our experiences at their disposal but we have no formal presence."
  • "The Americans are the leader of this coalition and they feel that Daesh is not effective anymore and because of this they want to be present in the region in another manner."
  • "The days of the Holy Defense were difficult days, but amidst these difficulties, these seditions and tests that people express their capabilities and their talents blossom."
  • "In the imposed war, a nation which had just recently revolted and was not dominant in its affairs was the subject of attack by countries which were benefitted from all sorts of political, military, economic, and even intelligence support."
  • "In the 8 year imposed war, America, Europe, and reactionary Arab countries, all joined together as a union against the nation of Iran so that they could embarrass this nation."
  • "In these 8 years, a flood of military armaments from the West and East went to Iraq until the back of the nation of Iran would break, but our people were able to, in spite of [the] economic blockade, sanctions, pressure from psychological operations impose their will in an un-even war in the longest war of the twentieth century."
  • "Today, another war has been imposed against our Islamic values, and a silent war against you and our people has occurred; a war which its death-raining armaments are those very satellites and cyber-space."
  • "If our enemies in the imposed war targeted the bodies of our youth, today they by utilizing satellite companies and cyber-space ensnare their mind and soul."
  • Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, the head of Iran’s Judiciary comments on Iran’s experience during the Iran-Iraq War:
  • Deputy Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Hossein Salami comments on the Iran-Iraq War:
  • Seminaries Manager Ayatollah Seyyed Hashem Hosseini Boushehri comments on changing pattern of warfare:    
  • Fars News Agency reports that: "Iran's radar systems can discover and trace any kind of flying object in two minutes, Deputy Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Colonel Mohammad Hossein Shamkhali underlined that. Shamkhali, who is the deputy commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base for Research and Self-Sufficiency Jihad, said on Wednesday Iran has optimized its old radar systems and built several new radar and air defense systems."
  • Commander Ali-Asghar Gorjizadeh, IRGC counter-espionage chief, is also appointed as Ansar al-Mahdi bodyguard unit of the Guards. Gorjizadeh replaces Commander Mohammad-Javad Khoshnavaz. 
  • The AP reports: "A senior Revolutionary Guard commander says a top Iranian general and 70 Iranian advisers were on the ground in Iraq this summer, helping Kurdish fighters defend the regional capital of Irbil against Islamic State militants. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who runs the Guard's aerospace division, says Gen. Ghasem Soleimani "stood up to" the Islamic State group and was instrumental in preventing the fall of Irbil."
  • Reuters reported: "The United States informed Iran in advance of its intention to strike Islamic State militants in Syria and assured Tehran that it would not target the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a senior Iranian official told Reuters. The communication, confirmed in part by a senior U.S. State Department official, may signal the estranged foes are inching toward a level of contacts rarely seen in over three decades since the 1979 Islamic revolution when a hostage crisis prompted Washington to sever ties with Tehran."

Nuclear Issue 

  • Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, in commenting on Iran’s nuclear negotiations and sense of independence notes:
    • "God-willing [Inshallah] in nuclear negotiations, the same independence and steadfastness will be present over [our] values, because this great capital is in reality the red-line of the revolution, system, and leader. All on the negotiating team support the framework of fundamentals of this system. The main principal of the system is the preservation of pride and the independence of the country and its defense."
  • Ali Larijani, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament [Majlis] states: 
  • "In the nuclear issue, we must strengthen our conditions by steadfastness from within, otherwise they will pursue Iran."
  • Reuters reports: "U.S. President Barack Obama urged Iran on Wednesday "do not let this opportunity pass" for a nuclear deal by which Tehran would rein in its atomic program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions."
  • Reuters reported: "Iran dismissed on Tuesday as "fabricated ambiguities" suspicions that it has carried out nuclear arms research, a day after it came under renewed Western pressure to help clear up U.N. watchdog concerns about its atomic energy program. Addressing an annual meeting of the 162-nation International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), senior official Behrouz Kamalvandi also said Iran was committed to trying to reach a negotiated solution to its decade-old nuclear dispute with the West."
  • Reuters reported: If Iran and world powers reach a long-term nuclear deal that ends sanctions against Tehran, the agreement will open the door to deeper cooperation on regional peace and stability and the fight against terrorism, Iran's president said on Tuesday."

Economy

  • Resalat-News, citing Tasnim ran a headline quoting a Deputy from Iran’s Central Bank (CBI) proclaiming: "600 companies in the country are linked to banks."
  • Assadollah Asgar-Owladi, the Head of the Iran-Russia Chamber of Commerce, reports a "significant increase" in exports to Russia during the past two weeks. Asgar-Owladi also says many of the products are of Pakistani or Indian origin which were re-exported to Russia from Iran. 
  • Reuters reports: "The European Union is quietly increasing the urgency of a plan to import natural gas from Iran, as relations with Tehran thaw while those with top gas supplier Russia grow chillier. Two "ifs" - the removal of sanctions on Iran and the addition of some pipeline infrastructure - are not preventing EU planners preparing, a European Commission source involved in developing EU energy strategy told Reuters."

Human Rights

  • Esmail Ahmadi-Moqadam, Law Enforcement Forces chief, claims that he is opposed to the filtering of the internet based social media. 
  • The Washington Post reports: "The jailing of a Washington Post reporter without public charges in Iran is not evidence of a power struggle between moderate and conservative political forces, Iran’s president said Tuesday. President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate, expressed optimism that the generally conservative Iranian judiciary would “comport itself in a fair manner” in the case of reporter Jason Rezaian and his wife, Iranian journalist Yeganeh Salehi, who was also arrested."
