Iran Press Review: 7 Jan.

Politics

  • Tasnim News Agency reports that tomorrow, January 8th, “the fifth conference of conservatives with speeches by Ayatollah Alam al-Hoda, [Gholam-Ali] Haddad-Adel, and Hojjat al-Eslam [Seyyed Reza] Taqavi will be held” in Tehran.
  • Resalat-News reports on a congratulatory declaration by Iran’s recognized religious minorities “to the Supreme Leader and the heads of the three branches [lit. powers] and national and military officials” in honor of the birthday of the Prophet of Islam.
  • Resalat-News additionally reports a quote by unnamed analysts, cautioning against turning the issue of pollution into a domestic political football.  

Foreign Policy

  • Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni, delivers a speech to the people of Qom, proclaiming:
    • “The enmity of the Arrogance (a reference to America) with the nation of Iran has no end, and officials must, by relying on domestic forces, remove the weapon of sanctions from the hand of the untrustworthy enemy.”
  • In a meeting with the Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Ala al-Din Boroujerdi, and the Norwegian Ambassador to Iran, Boroujerdi relates:
    • “The insecurities and crises of the present in the region is a product of the mistakes of America and the actions of the allies of this country in arming and supporting terrorist groups.”
  • Ammar al-Hakim, the head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, met with Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli-Larijani today, proclaiming:
    • “The increase in bilateral cooperation between Iran and Iraq, is cause for the strengthening of the world of Islam and the security and stability of the region.”
    • Larijani states: “The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to increase relations with Iraq and [is ready to] transfer its capabilities and experiences to this country in attaining development and progress.”           
  • Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, a noted conservative politician and head of the Saadi Foundation met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad-Javad Zarif, and praised him, saying:
    • “Mohammad-Javad Zarif, the Foreign Minister, is a successful diplomat and he has a correct and deep cultural interest and perspective, and it is these sensibilities [of Zarif] which warm our hearts in the Saadi Foundation.”
  • The hardline Masregh News website reports statements by DAESH (the Persian/Arabic acronym for the Islamic State) supporters after the terrorist-attack in Paris today where 12 people were killed. Mashregh News reported part of what the DAESH supporter wrote:
    • “God is Great, God is Great! [Allah-u Akbar, Allah-u Akbar] God! Bring forth the fear in their hearts and remove their wickedness from the Muslims…France is the greatest reason for war against the Muslims around the world.”

Military & Security

  • Commander Seyyed Massoud Jazayeri, the Deputy General Staff of the Armed Forces, exclaims in a speech commemorating the Karbala 5 operation in the Iran-Iraq War:
    • “The successful experience of the Islamic Revolution is correctly indicative that power-seeking regimes and America when confronted with this steadfast will, shall kneel.”
    • “During the Holy Defense (the name given in Iran to the Iran-Iraq War), our people proved that it is possible to defeat America and its lackeys, and this is counted as one of the history-making events of this era.” 
  • Commander Amin Shariati, an acquaintance of the late Hamid Taqavi from the Iran-Iraq War, weighs-in on Taqavi’s war service, record, and activities:
    • “Everything that is mentioned of this great martyr is related to after the years of 63 and 64 (ca. 1984/5 – 1985/6) which is connected to the Ramezan base and other services of this martyred commander.”
    • “When the war started, we were in the IRGC of Ahvaz. At that time, the IRGC had no military intelligence, however it did have intelligence, but it was related to identifying theMunafiqeen (the name given in Iran to the Mujahideen-e Khalq/MEK/MKO), groups, and anti-revolutionary currents.”
    • “When Iraq attacked, we had a need for a team to address the identification and to see areas [relating to] until what region Iraq had progressed. Hamid Taqavi was a part of that group, which with Arab clothes, a Dishdasha and Keffiya(Arab dress and scarf, respectively), took up a weapon and rode on a motorcycle so that he could identify [the area], and at night returned to the IRGC of Ahvaz.”
    • “After these events, Taqavi was transferred to the IRGC in Susangerd. In Susangerd he became in charge of Shahid Zein al-Din’s IRGC intelligence. For a while, the martyr Taqavi was aside Zein al-Din. Taqavi was very, very, brave person. No matter how much I saw so, it is insufficient. He was a highly devout person. The only days he never fasted were the days it was Haram [forbidden] to do so. He did his prayers early, and partook in evening prayers.”
    • “In the IRGC of Susangerd there was a building related to the intelligence [unit], and whenever I, at night, I went to the building I noticed a lantern on and the martyr Zein al-Din and martyr Taqavi were in a state of preforming evening prayers.”
    • “After Zein al-Din left, Taqavi became in charge of the IRGC intelligence of Susangerd. Identifiying the enemy required people with experience who knew the area. We did not know the region. One of the very valuable works of the martyr Taqavi was that he used indigenous forces for identification purposes.”
    • “Commander Taqavi played an outstanding role in standing-up the military intelligence of the IRGC.”
    • “After that, he entered the Ramezan base [where] he became acquainted with the boys from Tabriz, Fars, Khorasan, and other cities, and in those years he entered Iraq as an extraterritorial force.”
    • “The liberation of Susangerd is beholden to the services of this noble martyr.”
  • Defa Press runs a headline quoting Dr. Hossein Ardestani, the head of the Center for Documents and Research of the Holy Defense, saying: “The greatness of the Holy Defense must be preserved.” He further noted:
    • “Preserving this national identity is more important than the event itself.”
    • “The pride of the Islamic Republic is the strategy of “Neither East Nor West,” of the Imam…therefore you Commanders and soldiers have taken the embryonic stage of it to maturity, and today, its final stage is in a state of being formed.”
    • “Much like the Supreme Leader has said: “There is no need to exaggerate about the Holy Defense” since in the war a divine event occurred.”
  • In a lengthy interview with Defa Press, Esmaeil Kowsari, now a Member of Parliament and a one-time veteran of the Iran-Iraq War, comments on the various statements by officials with respect to end the war, and the details of the Karbala 4 and 5 operations.

Nuclear Issue

  • Mansur Haghighatpour, a Parliamentary representative from Ardebil and member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, states:
    • “America’s flight from a final nuclear accord and the influence of the paper-tiger-like superpower from the triangle of knavery, meaning the reactionary and discord-like Zionism during the last days of nuclear negotiations caused the determination of the final accord to be postponed to the month of Tir in [13]94 (ca. June/July 2014)
    • “The nuclear negotiating team’s greatest investment is the Leader’s authority and the support of the dear people, and they must be present in nuclear negotiations with revolutionary strength, and put the envy of any kind of weak negotiation in the heart of America.”
  • Tasnim News Agency runs an analysis piece titled: “America’s news Congress and the growing complexity of Iran’s nuclear negotiations.”
  • Ala al-Din Boroujerdi, the head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, met with the Norwegian Ambassador to Iran, stating:
    • “Attaining a final agreement depends on the objectivity of the sides negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and accepting the right of the nation of Iran in attaining nuclear energy and engaging in peaceful nuclear activities.”

Economy & Trade

  • The head of Iran’s Judiciary, Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli-Larijani,comments on the economy and nuclear diplomacy amidst an address honoring the birthday of the Prophet of Islam:
    • “The solution to economic problems is self-confidence and procession along the path of resistance economics, however some tie this issue to nuclear negotiations.”
    • “We must not tie economic issues to the nuclear negotiations, since our country is a rich country with abundant resources, and striving youth and elites that can, by relying on this natural resource and great human investment, continue their path and surpass the sanctions and economic conspiracies of the enemy.”
    • “Tying economic issues to the nuclear negotiations is a type of assurance granting to the enemy. Officials and those of the pen in the outlets must be careful that their most disappointed debates does not aid the conspiracies of the enemy.”
  • Fars News Agency reports: “Singapore plans to send a high-ranking delegation to Tehran on January 31 to pave the ground for the further development of economic cooperation with Iran. The delegation, comprising of tradesmen and senior officials of 30 major Singaporean companies, will visit Iran on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.”
  • Fars News Agency reports: “Iran announced that it has discovered a new gold mine in the Northeastern Province of Khorassan Razavi. Head of the Province's Trade Organization Razziyeh Alirezayee said on Tuesday that the gold mine with 889 thousand tons of goldstones was discovered in the outskirts of the city of Kashmar some 217 km South of the provincial capital of Mashhad.”
  • Mehr News Agency reports: “The head of Italian Chamber of Commerce has said sanctions against Iran have damaged European and especially Italian companies. Silvano Pascuno who was speaking on the sidelines of the first Italian Special Exhibition in Tehran International Permanent Fairground on Wednesday, said that Italian companies had participated in the exhibition with prescience of Iran’s economic conditions; “Iran’s market and economy enjoys high potentials of growth, a fact that has lured Italian companies and tradesmen not to ignore its potentially profitable perspectives; we have decided to participate in the exhibition in next year with twice or trice as the present number of companies,” he told the press.”
