Taliban claims to shoot down Afghan military helicopter

The Taliban claimed it shot down an Afghan military helicopter in the western province of Farah yesterday. Afghan officials denied the helicopter was shot – and instead claimed it crashed due to a mechanical failure. Regardless, the Afghan military was unable to secure the crash site and recover the five soldiers on-board for at least 10 hours after the helicopter went down. more...

Shabaab attacks US and partner force outside Mogadishu

On Sept. 11, Al-Qaeda’s Somalia branch attacked US and partner forces, resulting in casualties on both sides, according to a US Forces Africa Command (AFRICOM) press release today. The attack occurred in Mubaraak, a central village located approximately 37 miles west of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu. Islamic State’s emir for its Khorasan province reported killed

Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security claimed that Abu Sayed Bajauri, the emir of the Islamic State’s branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which it calls the Khorasan province, was killed in an airstrike in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Aug. 25.
