Along with Senator McConnell, Republican signatories include Tom Cotton, Orrin Hatch, John Cornyn, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, John Thune and Mark Kirk. Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, two possible 2016 presidential contenders, also signed.

Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, a think-tank that has urged a tough line on Tehran, said that the letter was a warning that Congress must provide “vigorous review, advice and consent” on what would be “one of the most important arms control agreements in American history”.

In a bid to reassure sceptics, Mr Obama again said over the weekend that the US would walk away from the nuclear talks if a verifiable deal with Iran couldn't be reached.
