GOP Anger Over Iran Deal Snags Terror Watchdog Nominee

Republicans largely based their opposition to the Iran nuclear deal out of concern it would allow Iran to increase its support for terrorism. So it’s somewhat puzzling that GOP senators are now resisting the nomination of the man who even GOP allies say is best qualified to act as a watchdog of Iran’s global financial activities.

Adam Szubin was nominated by President Barack Obama in April to become Treasury’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial crimes, a position he has filled in an acting capacity since February. The GOP-led Senate has shown little eagerness in confirming Szubin.

“My sense is there is universal acclaim and respect for Adam but he really has been caught in the crossfire over the dispute between Senate Republicans and the president on Iran policy,” says Mark Dubowitz, executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and an outspoken critic of the nuclear agreement. “I couldn’t think of anyone better for this position.”
