Iran’s Telling SAMs

Iran seems bent on exposing the nuclear-deal illusions of President Obama even before he leaves office. The latest sign came Sunday, when Iran’s state-run media aired footage of the S-300 air-defense system maneuvering around Fordow.

That would be the underground nuclear facility south of Tehran whose existence was first disclosed by Western powers in 2009. Mr. Obama at the time called it a “direct challenge to the basic foundation of the nonproliferation regime.” Six years later the nuclear deal he negotiated would allow the mullahs to keep it running as a research facility so long as they don’t enrich uranium there for 15 years.

The regime isn’t waiting that long to fortify the site with the S-300 surface-to-air missiles, helpfully provided by Moscow earlier this year as a provocation to Washington. As sanctions expert Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies points out, “If Fordow is such a peaceful facility, why do the mullahs need the S-300 to protect it?”
