Supreme Court, Congress Take on Iran Terrorism Judgments

The Supreme Court agreed Thursday to hear a dispute over $1.75 billion in terrorism-related judgments against Iran while lawmakers moved to keep congressionally-imposed sanctions on the country until it pays $43 billion of such court-ordered judgments. 

The timing of the legal and legislative events concerning Iran judgments is coincidental. A Supreme Court decision in the case is unlikely to affect implementation of the broader Iran nuclear deal that would ease sanctions, national security experts said.

“Iran is aware that there are certain assets that are subject to our orders and liens,” said Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “I don’t think the Iranians are under any illusion that they are going to get that money back until those cases have been settled and the awards adjudicated.”
