Washington, D.C., March 30, 2004 – FDD Senior Fellow Claudia Rosett will speak about Colonel Gadhafi's Libya on Capitol Hill in a meeting organized by the American-Libyan Freedom Alliance (www.alfa-online.org).  Ms. Rosett, a former member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board and current columnist for the Wall Street Journal's Opinion Journal and European editions, has contributed to such publications as the New York Times, Commentary, The American Spectator, and The Weekly Standard.

The American-Libyan Freedom Alliance (AFLA) seeks to promote a democratic society in Libya and to raise awareness about the Gadhafi regime's human rights abuses.

A journalist with 23 years of experience, Claudia Rosett has made her mark with extensive writing on tyrannical regimes and human rights abuses.  Her most recent work has focused on corruption in the UN Oil-for Food program and on human rights abuses by the Libyan regime.  Her remarks will focus on how the US should deal with tyrants who agree to disarm even while they continue to repress their fellow citizens.

Other panelists at the conference will include:

·        Ambassador Mark Palmer speaking about the role that the US should play in helping Libya to build a democratic state.

·        Dr. Henry Schuler speaking about the role of oil sanctions in containing the Gadhafi regime.

·        Fathi Eljahmi a recently released Libyan political prisoner, speaking from Tripoli about human rights in Libya.  Mr Eljahmi's participation cannot be confirmed as the Libyan regime is attempting to cut off his access to any means of communication. 

FDD is a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit, non-partisan policy institute founded immediately after the attacks of September 11, 2001 to conduct research and education on global terrorism, and promote democracy worldwide.  FDD conducts outreach programs to support pro-democracy, anti-terrorism activists in the Middle East.
