Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, an American expert, said he was not surprised that some jihadists wanted to quit. “They are spending time fighting other rebels but they have also been ordered to carry out massive atrocities they didn’t expect. We need to encourage people to understand there is a way out,” he said.
Dr Gartenstein-Ross, who is director of the Centre for the Study of Terrorist Radicalisation in Washington, predicted that there would be a large number of defections from Isis in the coming year, although he said that many defecting fighters would just shift allegiance to al-Qaeda.
