When Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in 2011, many assumed al-Qaeda died with him.

But the militant organization—determined to fight for its vision of Islamic law against Western powers in general and the United States in particular—has proven more resilient than almost anyone imagined. In 2013, under the leadership of Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda branches and groups with similar ideologies have mounted attacks or operations everywhere from Mali to Somalia to Pakistan.

For more, VOR’s Justin Mitchell spoke with Daveed Gartenstein-Ross. He is a senior Fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, an adjunct assistant professor in Georgetown University's security studies department, and author of the book Bin Laden's Legacy. He wrote an article for Politico Magazine called “Al Qaeda's Big Year: How the Terrorist Group Made a Comeback in 2013.”
