The Appalling Reaction To Israeli Teens’ Kidnapping

Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies reminds us, “Abbas can’t have it both ways. It’s impossible for him to forge a unity government with Hamas and simultaneously cooperate closely with Israel as it conducts operations against Hamas. The Palestinians remain irreparably fractured politically over the role of religion and violence in their society. This will not only continue to encumber peace efforts, it will create leadership challenges for the Palestinians so long as jihadism remains an acceptable component of their national narrative.” He adds, “Mahmoud Abbas is in danger of losing the Palestinian public. We have seen in recent days expressions of outrage against his ‘collaboration’ with Israel. It is worth noting that he is now nine years into a four-year term.”
