Modi congratulates Rouhani on re-election as Iran President

State television congratulated Rouhani on his victory. The latest election tallies released by the Interior Ministry showed Rouhani with a commanding lead of 59 per cent, with 38.9 million votes counted.

Iranian news media reported that 75% of eligible voters cast ballots on Friday, in line with Iran’s typically robust voter turnout, which has not dipped below 60% for a presidential election in 20 years.


The U.S. placed new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic-missile program last week, on the same day that it agreed to continue waiving broader sanctions that were lifted by the 2015 nuclear agreement. “So I don’t expect any change” in US policy toward Iran, said Reuel Marc Gerecht, a senior fellow at the conservative Foundation for Defense of Democracy, and a former CIA Iran specialist. Trump and Saudi King Salman signed a series of defence agreements, including a weapons deal worth $110 billion U.S., taking effect immediately. Millions of Iranians voted late.
