VP Communications and Strategy

  • Great opportunity for a hard working, committed, communications professional to work with a dynamic team of experts and analysts focused on national security and foreign policy. As a senior member of our management team, you will develop and execute a first-class strategic communications strategy.
  • FDD is a non-profit, non-partisan policy institute focused on defeating terrorism and promoting democratic values. Referred to as the “Special forces of the policy community” we are implementing plans to take the organization to the next level. The role of the new V.P. for Communications will be key to our success.
  • Above all, we seek an entrepreneurial approach to defeating terrorism, achieving bipartisan consensus and broadening alliances.  Our communications team will develop and execute strategies that allow us to maximize our impact in priority constituencies. 

Responsibilities

  • Will develop and execute proactive strategies, programs and tactics to ensure the unique voice of FDD in the policy community;
  • Design and build a communications/web/social media and event planning team;
  • Act as a key member of the senior management team knowledgeable about the full range of fundraising, outreach and policy activities;
  • Work with scholars and experts to maximize the product dissemination and impact; promote experts on panels, at conferences, and in print, electronic and broadcast media;
  • Work with scholars/experts on written and broadcast products to maximize visibility.
  • Design and implement strategies to communicate FDD’s positions to key constituencies;
  • Review and upgrade FDD's social media activities;
  • Monitor current and forthcoming policy issues of importance to FDD;
  • Carry out a comprehensive branding and marketing review;
  • Design, implement and exploit appropriate metrics to evaluate impact;

Qualifications

  • Must be a seasoned leader of young communications professionals.
  • 10 years minimum related professional experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills including the ability to draft quickly and edit a range of written products.
  • Must have proven track record in raising profile of small organizations across multiple platforms.
  • A strong leader and team member with a background in foreign affairs, public affairs and communications.
  • A Big Plus: Familiarity and enthusiasm for the substance of FDD'S work: foreign policy in general, but specifically terrorism, national security, energy, Middle East, democracy, and non-proliferation.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to pitch and position stories.
  • Experience in USG Agencies, on Capitol Hill or think tanks a plus.
  • Robust rolodex inside the beltway a plus.
  • Event management experience a plus.
