Mostafa Bozorgnia

Title: Head of Ward 350 of Evin Prison

Sanctions: European Union (April 12, 2011)

In April 2011, the European Union listed Mostafa Bozorgnia among a number of individuals subject to sanctions for human rights violations.[1]

As Head of the Ward 350 of Evin Prison, Bozorgnia dealt “disproportionate violence upon prisoners,” according to the Official Journal of the European Union[2] The Iran Press News reported that Bozorgnia used torture and “humiliating” body inspections on prisoners.[3]

According to the Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, the conditions in Ward 350 of Evin Prison are cruel and unusual, as “there are 30 to 36 political prisoners in each cell and one third of them have to sleep on the ground.” [4] According to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Ward 350 is “the most crowded part of the Iranian prison system since the June 2009 election.” [5]

A report by the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran in June 2010 stated that “the food inside Ward 350 is of very low quality. The quality of ingredients is very low, to the point where sometimes use of spoiled ingredients have caused food poisoning among the prisoners.” [6] The same report also stated that a majority of the facilities in the prison were unhygienic.  The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reports that prisoners in Ward 350 “suffer a multitude of illnesses and physical ailments caused by severe physical and psychological pressure during their interrogations.”[7]

According to the National Council of Resistance of Iran, in November 2008 Bozorgnia and his forces attacked a group of prisoners at the Evin Prison following a memorial service for an inmate. [8] In August 2010, the National Council of Resistance of Iran reported that Bozorgnia had threatened to transfer prisoners who did not fast during Ramadan to solitary confinement. [9] In addition, the Students Committee in Iran reported that Bozorgnia threatened prisoners by saying: “we will turn this place into another Kahrizak,” in reference to the Kahrizak prison, where detainees are said to be tortured.[10]
