Syria Fires Across Two Borders, as Risk Grows
ISTANBUL—Fierce fighting in Syria spilled over two borders on Monday, undermining hopes for a United Nations-backed peace plan just hours ahead of a cease-fire deadline and underlying the conflict's potential to ensnare neighboring states.
Clashes between Syrian soldiers and rebel fighters along Syria's border with Turkey wounded at least five people, including two Turkish officials, when stray bullets hit a refugee camp inside Turkey's territory, Turkish authorities said.
Shots fired from Syrian troops penetrated inside the perimeter of the camp at the border town of Kilis, prompting Turkey's foreign ministry to summon Syria's chargé d'affaires in Ankara to demand troops stop shooting.
