Seyeed Hassan Shariati

Title: Head of Mashhad Judiciary

Sanctions: European Union (April 12, 2011)

In April 2011, the European Union named Seyeed Hassan Shariati as an individual subject to sanctions for human rights violations. According to the Council of the European Union, Shariati presided over numerous trials that occurred behind closed doors, in which the accused were denied basic rights. Many of the “confessions” presented during these trials were obtained through torture. [1]

The Council of the European Union charges that Shariati is responsible for issuing a number of death sentences “without proper observance of fair hearing procedures.”[2]
