Testimonies by Mark Dubowitz

April 2018

Human Rights Situation in Iran

The nationwide protests that began to consume Iran in late December reflect longstanding frustration with Tehran’s repression, corruption, economic mismanagement, water shortages, and foreign adventurism. Though the country has witnessed hundreds of protests in recent years, the latest demonstrations, which continue to this day, mark the first major, widely covered eruption since the quashed 2009 Green Revolution, and represent a potential inflection point in the clerical regime’s long-term viability. Protestors have challenged not only specific policies, but also the government’s very legitimacy as a putative representative of the Iranian people.

Assessing the Iran Deal

President Donald Trump promised to “rigorously enforce” the JCPOA,  which he has also called “the worst deal ever negotiated.”  While strict enforcement is an important first step, it is insufficient. The JCPOA provides Iran with a patient pathway to nuclear weapons capability. If the United States simply enforces the agreement, Iran will become a threshold nuclear weapons state.

November 2015

Iran Terror Financing and the Tax Code

Despite the fanfare over the recently reached Iran deal, the Iranian regime remains involved in a range of destabilizing activities and illicit conduct. Recently, Iran tested a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead in violation of a key U.N. Security Council resolution,  increased its crackdown on its citizens,  and expanded its support for Syria’s Assad regime and terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas.

Examining What a Nuclear Iran Deal Means for Global Security

A negotiated agreement is the preferred solution to peacefully prevent Iran from achieving a nuclear weapons capacity. Iran’s record of nuclear deception, role as the leading state sponsor of terrorism, and egregious human rights abuses, however, does not inspire confidence in Tehran’s commitment to honor a final nuclear agreement with the P5+1.
