Dear Friend,

Cliff May in Afghanistan in 2008.Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the threat of radical, religiously motivated terrorism has grown more diffuse but it has not gone away. Members of al-Qaeda and other self-proclaimed “jihadi” groups continue to plot attacks and the peoples of free nations remain at risk.

As the Fort Hood massacre, the ongoing battles inside Pakistan and Yemen, and the 2011 bombings in Mumbai remind us, the enemies of democratic societies are still hard at work. Osama bin Laden may be dead but the Iranian theocrats continue to develop nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them. And the Arab Spring may yet turn to winter, ushering in hostile and dangerous regimes.

In these uncertain times, FDD makes sense of a complicated world and a complicated war, providing our nation’s policy makers with accurate information and smart policy recommendations. Through research, education, investigative journalism, legal initiatives, and targeted communications campaigns, FDD fights a war of ideas and turns ideas into actions that lead to positive results. We identify effective policies and promote them energetically to the policy community, opinion leaders and the general public.

FDD's mission is to understand who our enemies are, what they intend -- and how best to defeat them. For the children who will inherit the world of tomorrow, we must protect the world’s liberal democracies and the freedoms we hold dear.

We thank those who are investing in the future through FDD.

Donate to Make a Difference

An investment in the Foundation for Defense of Democracies is an investment in the future of free nations. The returns on those tax-free investments are both tangible and intangible.

Many of our donors decide to make a difference in the battle to defend democracies against radical Islam by working with us as venture philanthropists. You can specify that your donation—and the support of others who share your concern—benefits an existing FDD project or a new initiative.

With the assistance of our investors, we have incubated a number of projects and organizations that achieve real measurable results: the Long War Journal, the Committee on the Present Danger, the Iran Energy Project, the Center for Law and Counterterrorism, the FDD Campus Fellowships, the Investigative Reporting Project, the Center for Study of Terrorist Radicalization (CSTR), and others.

We have incubated over a dozen other organizations and projects that we’d be delighted to discuss with you in person. These organizations and projects were inspired by and established through the ingenuity and support of our donors. We welcome your ideas for new organizations and projects that need to be developed to better fight the war of ideas. ... more
